Spring Events

  • The 16th Arita Hinamatsuri Festival

    With plenty of colourful Arita porcelain, this festival announces the arrival of spring.

    With the beginning of spring, Arita Town holds its annual Arita Ceramic Hina Festival.
    Hina-dolls made from porcelain are displayed at various places all around the town. Enjoy the Hinamatsuri in combination with colourful Arita-Porcelain!
    Don't miss the world's biggest 7-tiered hina-platform made from porcelain and hina-dolls made by Arita's Kakiemon Kiln and by the German Meissen Manufacture. These hina-dolls exemplify the skillfulness of their famous makers.


  • Opening of the Climbing Season of Mt. Kurokami

    Mt. Kurokami was appointed one of the "100 Greatest Japanese Natural Areas to be Conseved for the 21st Century"

  • Magarigawa Cherry Blossom Festival

    The Cherry Blossom Festival is held to pray for safety, plentiful harvest, the prosperity of the local industry and the health of Arita's inhabitants.

  • Tango Rhododendron Festival

    Enjoy rhododendrons, cherry trees, azaleas and wisteria in full bloom!

  • Arita Ceramics Fair

    The Arita Ceramics Fair is Japan's largest ceramics market, visited by porcelain lovers from all over the country.

    [Date] Every year from April 29 to May 5
    Place: all around the town ※This event mainly takes place between JR Arita Station and Kami-Arita Station.

    The Arita Ceramics Fair is held every year during Golden Week.
    Approximately 500 stands open along the 4-kilometer-long main road. With more than 1 million visitors every year, it is Arita's biggest event.
    Apart from bargain prices for ceramics, there is a variety of events, reaching from stamp rallies to table setting expositions.

  • Arita international ceramics exhibition

    An open exhibition of unpublished ceramics

    We raise ceramics works from the whole country and plan improvement of improvement, design of interchange, quality of further technique, and "Arita international ceramics exhibition" is ceramics exhibition which expected the succession of folkcraft and industrial development.
    It roots back to a Ceramics Fair held in Keiun Temple in Arita in 1896.
    In the run of its more than 100-years-long history, this exhibition was the gateway to success for many young potters, such as Manji Inoue and Hiroshi Nakajima, whose works are designed Important Intangible Cultural Heritages, the fellow member of Japan Art Academy Ryuzan Aoki, or the ceramics designer Masahiro Mori – in the scope of this event they all received prizes for their early works.

  • Touso-Sai - A Festival for the Father of Arita Porcelain

    This festival is dedicated in gratitude to Ri Sanpei, the "Father of Arita-Porcelain" who initiated the development of Arita's ceramic industry.

  • Firefly Festival of Arita

    [Date] The end of May, 2020
    Place: Parking Space in front of the East Branch of Arita Town Hall

    Good spots to view fireflies in Arita are along the Shirakawa-river in Shirakawa-district and along the river nearby Jogenji-temple in Yamamoto-district.
    We have many people know natural environments that fireflies inhabit, and "firefly Festival of Arita" is held at part of activity that we will protect in future again.
    In the festival venue, families can enjoy numerous events and stands until late night and get a foretaste of the summer festivals to come.

  • Arita Summer Festival Firework

    In the scope of this summer festival, the people of Arita express their gratitude towards their ancestors.

  • Arita Window Display Contest

    High school students shape Arita!

    The details of past Arita Window Display Contest

    Every summer Arita Town hosts the Arita Window Display Contest.
    In the scope of this event high school students compete in decorating the show windows of ceramic shops along Arita's historical main street.
    Please see display work which makes use of fresh, soft sensitivity only by the teens and technique that we learned at school, and was produced by all means while enjoying atmospheric cityscape walk of Arita-cho.

  • Juuhachi-Ya (Night of the 18th)

    The highlights of this event are groups of young men performing a dynamic quarrel and a self-made pinwheel firework.

    [Date] Every year on August 18
    Place: Ryusenji-Temple

    Juhachi-Ya Festival is held in the Oogi-district of Arita Town every year on August 18.
    This traditional festival roots back to rain-making rituals performed in the Edo-period when Arita was hit by a severe drought.
    Year by year, the dynamic quarrel (dotemakasho) performed by local adolescents and the impressive pinwheel firework (jamon) are admired by a large number of visitors from Japan and abroad.

    ※"“Juhachiya”" of 2020 will perform only prayer in the people concerned for prevention of new coronavirus infection spread. Quarrel popular group dance "dotemakasho", set-piece firework "jar mon" are not held.

Autumn events

  • Arita Sarayama Festival

    The highlight of this festival is the porcelain plate dance "Sara-Odori", which is only performed in Arita, the birthplace of Japanese porcelain.
    The Sara-Odori parade is a must-see for every visitor of Arita.

    The parade moves all the way down from Izumiyama Rotary Street to JR Arita Station.

    The highlight of the Arita Sarayama Festival is a plate-dance (sara-odori) performed by the townsfolk of Arita - the dancers hold small porcelain plates in both hands and clap them like castanets.
    Apart from groups of adults and children from the Sarayama-district, all associations, organizations and enterprises in Arita perform the plate dance during the parade.
    The sara-odori, which is accomplanied by the dance song "Arita Chirorin Melody" (once even sung by pop icon Hibari Misora), is typical for the birthplace of porcelain.

  • Arita Food and Agriculture Festival

    Arita which is full of crops of nature.
    Other than sale of delicious farm products and artefact, events to be able to enjoy in families are varied.

  • Sue, Arida porcelain Festival of the 16th autumn

    Enjoy Arita's ceramic culture, rich nature and good meals served on splendid ceramic dishes.

    [Date] From Thursday, November 19, 2020 to 23rd Monday (holiday)

    The motto of the Arita Autumn Ceramic Festival is to express hospitality through good food served on splendid ceramics.
    Other than the Arita Ceramics Fair in spring, the highlight of this fair are Arita's beautifully coloured autumn leaves.
    It is full of events not to be able to overlook including guided tour over Arita Uchiyama area appointed in "sound act firewood kiln circulation of flame" and country-designated Important Preservation Districts for Groups of Traditional Buildings where scenery only by Arita is seen in including smoke going up from the skill and chimney of expert craftsman.


  • Bowl Festival of the 38th bowl memorial service, Arita

    Event that is various in Period and advantageous sale are held. "Spring bowl exchange" to have you change bowl which is missing in that, and was broken for new bowl (one limit per person) is event only by Arita.

  • Arita Ishiba Sumo Tournament

    This event is a ritual sumo tournament devoted to a mountain god of the Izumiyama Quarry.

Winter events

  • Event at the Turn of the Year: Arita's Porcelain Bowl Illumination

    Visit Touzan Shrine for hatsumode (the first Shinto shrine visit of the New Year) and enjoy the fantastic illumination with more than 1000 votive candles made from porcelain.

    [Date] Every year on the night between December 31 and January 1 (end: approx. 2:00 A.M.)

    Arita's Porcelain Bowl Illumination is an event held on New Year's Eve. Approximately thousand votive candles made from porcelain illuminate the way from Arita's main crossing to Touzan Shrine.
    Moreover, the local kilns are fired throughout the night and snow broth – a local specialty of Arita – is served: a miso soup with grated radish and grilled mochi rice cakes which is traditionally eaten at midnight.
